Africa and Korea Deepen Focus on AI and Digital Infrastructure

Africa and South Korea are strengthening economic cooperation around artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and private investment. The African Development Bank and Korean partners have announced several initiatives aimed at supporting digital transformation, technology investment and skills development across African economies.

A proposed Korea Africa AI Hub will bring together governments, financial institutions, research centres, universities and businesses to support responsible AI development, adoption and financing across the continent.

The developments reflect a broader shift towards positioning digital infrastructure, AI and technology capabilities as part of Africa’s long-term economic transformation.

AfCFTA Continues to Advance Regional Trade Integration

Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) continues to gather momentum as countries work towards reducing trade barriers and expanding market access across the continent. Progress on trade facilitation, regional payment systems and rules of origin is gradually creating a more integrated trading environment for African businesses.

For organisations operating across multiple African markets, these developments could unlock new opportunities for regional expansion, supply chain optimisation and cross-border investment in the years ahead.

Africa Attracts New Focus on Green Industrialisation

The African Development Bank and Hyundai Motor Group have agreed to explore cooperation in clean energy, sustainable mobility, transport and logistics, electric vehicle value chains, industrial manufacturing and talent development.

The proposed cooperation also links Africa’s critical minerals with emerging electric vehicle value chains, reflecting growing interest in developing more value within the continent rather than exporting raw materials alone.

While the agreement is currently non-binding and does not itself commit either party to specific projects, it signals growing international interest in Africa’s industrial and green transition.

AI and Trade Become Increasingly Interconnected

The World Trade Organisation has highlighted the growing relationship between artificial intelligence and global trade, noting that AI-related products accounted for an estimated 42% of global goods trade growth in the previous year.

The organisation also points to the increasingly global nature of AI supply chains, spanning semiconductors, data, computing infrastructure and digital services.

For businesses, this means AI is increasingly becoming not only a technology issue but also a trade, supply chain, investment and competitiveness issue.

Global Trade Enters a New Phase of Diversification

The European Union and the Philippines have concluded a new free trade agreement aimed at expanding trade and diversifying supply chains, particularly in areas such as electronics, semiconductors and industrial machinery. The agreement forms part of a broader effort by the EU to deepen commercial relationships across the Indo-Pacific.

For African businesses, the development is another indication of how global supply chains are being reshaped around diversification, regional partnerships and alternative trading relationships.
